At The Kilted Unicorn, Scotland isn't just another destination — it's our obsession. Since 2006, we've been designing itineraries that stray from the beaten path to take you where few travelers venture: a family-owned distillery tucked into a glen, a bed & breakfast run by passionate locals, a rugged coastline that only the locals know.

Every self-guided tour is crafted by our specialists in close conversation with you — tailored to your pace, your passions, and your budget.

Why The Kilted Unicorn

What makes all the difference

🗺️
Scotland Specialists — Exclusively

We work with Scotland and Scotland alone. No generic catalogue, no secondary destinations. Just deep on-the-ground knowledge built over 18 years of regular visits and relationships with local hosts and guides.

📞
One Dedicated Advisor, Start to Finish

You speak with the same person from initial planning through to your return home. No call centres, no staff rotation. Your travel advisor knows your file, your preferences, and personally stands behind your trip.

🏡
Addresses You Won't Find in Any Guidebook

Castles converted into hotels, family-owned manors, fishing lodges on the shores of a loch... Our partner accommodations have been visited in person and won't show up on booking comparison sites. That's where the difference lies.

⚙️
Truly Bespoke, Not Off-the-Shelf

Every itinerary begins with a conversation. Duration, pace, budget, interests, mobility — everything is adjusted. No two programmes in our history of 3,000+ trips have ever been the same.

🛡️
Safety & 24/7 On-Trip Support

Fully bonded and insured. And an emergency number active 7 days a week throughout your trip, so you're never on your own when the unexpected happens.

🌿
Responsible Travel

We favour independent accommodations, local producers, and itineraries that spread tourism beyond over-visited hotspots. Travel better, not necessarily less.

What our travelers say

Our first trip to Scotland, and it was flawless. Every accommodation had character, every stop had purpose. You could tell there was real on-the-ground knowledge behind it — not just a random list of providers.

The NC500 route they designed was exactly what we'd hoped for — and then some. Every restaurant and stop they suggested was excellent. We especially loved the illustrated roadbook, beautifully put together.

Third trip booked through The Kilted Unicorn. The Hebrides itinerary was our most beautiful yet. The practical on-the-ground advice, the quality of every B&B, and the responsiveness of our advisor made all the difference. We're booking again next year.

FAQ

Your questions, answered

We answer the most common questions from our travelers before and during their Scotland adventure.

Ask us anything
What does a self-guided tour with The Kilted Unicorn typically cost?
+

Our self-guided tours start from $1,690 per person for 7 days, based on two travelers. For 10 to 12 days in the Highlands with boutique accommodations, budget typically ranges from $2,500 to $4,000 per person. This includes all nights, rental car, and our bespoke planning service. Flights and most meals are not included unless otherwise noted.

Do I have to drive on the left? Is it difficult?
+

Yes, driving is on the left in Scotland. Most travelers adjust quickly, especially outside the cities. Many of our clients who were nervous beforehand come back raving about the single-track roads on the islands and Highlands. We recommend starting on busier roads for the first day or two, and our roadbook includes practical reminders to ease you in.

When is the best time to visit Scotland?
+

Scotland is a year-round destination, but each season offers a radically different experience. May–June brings the longest days and nature in full bloom. July–August are the warmest months but also the busiest, with midges along the coasts. September–October deliver the most stunning autumn light. Winter (November–March) offers snow-dusted landscapes, total authenticity, fewer tourists, and lower prices.

Do you offer family-friendly tours?
+

Absolutely. Scotland is a fantastic destination for families — the castles, the legends, and the landscapes fire up imaginations of children and adults alike. We adapt itineraries to family rhythms, avoiding long daily drives and incorporating activities like pony trekking, wildlife spotting, and kid-friendly castle tours.

Is Loch Ness worth visiting?
+

Yes — but not for Nessie. Loch Ness is worth the trip for its sheer scale (the deepest lake in the UK), the atmospheric ruins of Urquhart Castle on its banks, and the road that hugs the loch towards Inverness. It's often the first great Highland loch that travelers encounter, and the impact is real. The chance of spotting the monster, however, remains slim.
