Across the Forth, into Fife

St Andrews is three things at once: the place golf was codified, a university older than most countries in Europe, and a cathedral that was the largest building in Scotland before the Reformation pulled it down. All three sit within a few hundred metres of each other on a headland over the North Sea.

The East Neuk, the corner of Fife south of it, is the other half of the day. Crail, Anstruther and Pittenweem are working harbours with crow-stepped gables and red pantiles, built on trade with the Low Countries. They look Dutch because they partly are.

Because the day is private, your driver-guide shapes it around you: longer on the links if golf is why you came, longer on the harbour walls if it is not.

The day

4 stops, one day

  1. Fife coast

    St Andrews

The cathedral was begun in 1160 and abandoned after the Reformation; what is left is a west front, a gable and a graveyard on the cliff. The castle next to it has a bottle dungeon cut into the rock and a siege tunnel you can walk. Then the Old Course, the West Sands where they filmed the opening of Chariots of Fire, and the oldest streets of the university.

Admission about £10 for the cathedral and castle, not included, paid on the day
  2. East Neuk of Fife

    Crail

The harbour at Crail has been painted and photographed more than any other in Scotland, and in the right light it earns it: a stone quay below a cliff of pantiled houses. The village above is sixteenth and seventeenth century almost throughout, and the merchant trade with the Netherlands shows in every gable.

    • Crow-stepped gables
    • Lobster shack
  3. East Neuk of Fife

    Anstruther

The largest of the East Neuk harbours and the usual lunch stop: the fish and chips here have won the national title more than once, and the queue is part of the experience. The Scottish Fisheries Museum, in a row of old merchant buildings on the harbour, is better than it sounds.

    • Isle of May boats
Admission about £12 for the museum, not included, paid on the day
  4. East Neuk of Fife

    Pittenweem

The one that still works. Pittenweem lands the catch for the whole coast, so the harbour has boats in it rather than yachts, and the fish market runs in the morning. St Fillan's Cave, under the main street, has been a shrine since the seventh century.

When to go

The best months for this day

April to October gives you the harbours at their best and the boats to the Isle of May running from Anstruther. June and July are the long evenings on the West Sands.

The day runs all year. In winter the East Neuk is emptier and the light is lower and better, but some harbour cafés close and the museum keeps shorter hours.

Questions

Before you book

£650 for the whole party, one to eight travellers. The price does not change with the size of your group: the same £650 whether you are two or eight. Entry tickets are not included, about £10 for the St Andrews cathedral and castle joint ticket and about £12 for the Scottish Fisheries Museum. All prices in GBP.

No. Tee times on the Old Course are balloted and booked a long way ahead, and a round takes most of a day on its own. We show you the course, the Swilcan Bridge and the clubhouse, and we are happy to point you at the ballot if you want to come back and play.

Yes, and most of the parties we take do not play. The cathedral ruins, the castle and the three harbours stand on their own, and golf takes up perhaps half an hour of the day unless you ask for more.

The loop is 117 miles, about 3 hours 15 at the wheel measured on the road without stops. The stretch along the East Neuk between villages is short, and the long legs are the runs out from Edinburgh and back.

We go anyway. The museum, the castle and the cathedral visitor centre are all indoors, and the harbours have their own quality in bad weather. We do not cancel for weather. Free cancellation on your side applies up to 7 days before the date, under section 12.4 of our Booking Terms and Conditions.
