A self-drive tour is your car, your itinerary, our planning. We book the car, you collect it when you land, you drive between the stops we have designed, you sleep in the accommodation we have booked, and you eat where our booklet suggests (or somewhere better you found on the day). We are on WhatsApp if something goes sideways.
This is not a booking-website itinerary. It is a hand-built plan for your group, region by region, night by night, with the driving distances, the ferry timings, the parking notes, the shorter walks worth the detour. Every night's stay is confirmed under your name before you arrive.
Who it works for: travellers who want independence but do not want to spend three months piecing together B&Bs on booking.com, who want depth over ground covered, and who are comfortable driving on the left (or ready to learn).
Self-drive is not the right answer for every Scotland trip. It is the right answer when you value independence, want to stop where the light is good, and prefer your own coffee in the morning.

Six practical points we walk every self-drive client through. Not because Scotland is dangerous to drive, but because a Highland single-track lane is not a US highway or a French autoroute.
Roundabouts turn clockwise. Your steering wheel is on the right. Give yourself the first hour after pick-up in easier traffic before you head into the Highlands. Every UK and US driver we have taken through this has adjusted within a day.
Common on Skye, the Outer Hebrides, and the far northwest. You give way in the passing bay marked with a diamond sign. If the oncoming car is closer to a passing place, they use it and you wait. Simple etiquette that keeps a country running.
Road signs and speed limits are in miles per hour throughout the UK. Your car's speedometer will be too. Highway maps in your booklet show both miles and kilometres for clarity.
Your rental will typically be diesel, more efficient over Highland distances. Filling stations are frequent in the central belt and thin out in the far north. Our booklet flags where to top up.
Snow closes the Cairngorms passes in winter. Fog on the Cuillin ridges. Storm-force winds on the Bealach na Bà. Your booklet includes weather-conditional alternatives. When in doubt, message us.
999 for all emergencies (police, ambulance, coastguard, mountain rescue). Roadside breakdown is covered by your rental company; confirm at pick-up. Mobile signal is good on main roads and patchy in glens. Your booklet lists offline maps to download before you go.

Yes. Car hire is included in the price of our self-drive tours and we book it for you as part of your itinerary. Tell us the size of car you prefer and whether you need an automatic, and we build it into your proposal.
UK, US, Canadian, Australian and EU driving licences are accepted in Scotland for short-term rental (typically up to 12 months). No International Driving Permit is required for these. If your licence is not in Latin script, or if you are visiting from certain other countries, an IDP may be needed. Rental companies will confirm this at booking.
Your day-by-day itinerary with driving distances and times, each night's accommodation with check-in details, ferry timings if applicable, restaurant recommendations along the route, practical notes on parking, single-track etiquette, viewpoints worth the detour, and shorter walks with distance and difficulty. It is designed to be your only reference during the trip, though we stay reachable on WhatsApp for anything unexpected.
Your WhatsApp support line reaches an Edinburgh team member during Scottish business hours, seven days a week during the tourist season. For roadside assistance, your rental company provides breakdown cover; we recommend confirming this at pick-up. In genuine emergencies (accident, health), you dial 999 as anywhere in the UK. Our booklet includes local numbers for police, medical and mountain rescue.
Self-drive tours start from £2,000 per person per week (based on 2 sharing, standard boutique accommodation, in May, June, September and October). July and August cost more and November to April less; longer trips and higher-end accommodation scale from there. All prices are quoted in GBP and include the itinerary design, all accommodation bookings, ferries, car hire, entry fees to the sites in your itinerary, and WhatsApp support. Meals and international flights are separate.
