Many castle hotels in Scotland are Victorian mansions built in the Scots Baronial style, not medieval fortresses. A few are genuinely old: Dalhousie dates from the 15th century, Dornoch Castle from about 1500 and Barcaldine from 1609. Before booking, ask which building your room is in, check the policy on children, and plan one or two castle nights on a trip rather than every night.
Castle, tower house or Victorian mansion?
The word castle covers three very different buildings in Scotland. First, the real thing: a medieval tower or fortified house, with thick walls, small windows and narrow stairs. Then the Victorian castles, built in the 19th century by industrialists and landowners in the Scots Baronial style, with turrets and battlements but large rooms and big windows. Finally, the Georgian houses, which some hotels also call castles.
None of these is better than the others; they are simply different stays. A genuine tower house has atmosphere, but its rooms can be small and its stairs steep. A Victorian castle, by contrast, was built for comfort from the start, so it often has the grander bedrooms.
A clue in the listing
Historic Environment Scotland lists important buildings in three categories, A, B and C. Category A is the highest. It tells you about the building, though, not about the room or the service.
Castle hotels in Scotland worth knowing
The list below is not a ranking, and it is not a list of where we book. It is a set of well-known, public castle hotels, grouped by the age of the building, with facts checked on their own sites and in the official records in October 2026.
Genuinely old castles

Georgian houses
Melville Castle, near Lasswade outside Edinburgh, dates from 1786 to 1791 and has 33 rooms. Culloden House, on the edge of Inverness, is a Georgian mansion of about 1788 rather than a castle; however, Bonnie Prince Charlie used the house before it as his lodging and headquarters before the battle of 16 April 1746.
Country house hotels: the other choice
Some of the best places to stay in Scotland are not castles at all. They are Victorian shooting lodges and country houses, often smaller and quieter. The Torridon, for example, was built in 1887 as a hunting lodge for the Earl of Lovelace, has 18 rooms, and received one MICHELIN Key in 2026.
So when a castle is full or in the wrong place on your route, a country house hotel is rarely a step down. In fact, it is often the room our clients remember best, because the house is smaller and the staff know your name by the second morning.
How to judge a castle hotel now the stars have gone
VisitScotland retired its star grading on 31 March 2025, and businesses were asked to remove the old awards. As a result, a star rating on an old listing tells you nothing current. Three things help instead.
- The MICHELIN Keys. The guide's hotel award, published for 2026 on 18 September 2026. In Scotland, Gleneagles holds three Keys, The Fife Arms in Braemar and Cromlix two, Glenapp, Kinloch Lodge on Skye and The Torridon one.
- The building your room is in. Dornoch Castle, for example, has 9 rooms in the castle and 12 in a modern garden wing; Inverlochy has 17 in the castle and 8 in its walled garden. Both kinds can be lovely, but they are not the same night.
- Somebody who has been recently. Castles change hands, chefs and managers. A review from three years ago may describe a different hotel.
Children, exclusive use and booking
Policies on children vary widely, so check before you fall in love with a photo. Glenapp welcomes children of any age, for example, while Barcaldine takes children over 12 only, unless you book the whole castle.
Booking the whole castle
Exclusive use means your party has the building to itself, with no other guests. Barcaldine, for instance, sleeps 15 on exclusive use, with a two-night minimum. For a family celebration or a group of friends, this can cost less per head than it sounds. Bear in mind, however, that some famous castle venues take only exclusive bookings and never individual guests.
When to book
Few castle hotels publish a simple nightly rate; most show packages or dynamic prices. Rooms in June, July and August go first, especially at weekends, so book the castle nights as soon as your dates are fixed. Finally, ask about winter: some smaller places close or reduce service out of season.
Fitting a castle into a Scotland itinerary
A castle every night sounds wonderful and quickly becomes tiring: the dinners are long, the check-ins formal and the prices add up. We prefer one or two castle nights on a trip of a week or more, placed where you stay two nights, so you have time to enjoy the house.
Geography helps. Dalhousie and Melville sit just outside Edinburgh, ideal for the first or the last night. Inverlochy is on the road to Skye, Stonefield on the way to Islay, and Dornoch on the east coast of the far north. On our self-drive tours, accommodation is 4-star boutique as standard, with restored manors and castle hotels on the upper tiers; our private guided tours work the same way.
